Colonel Robert S. Allen Collection:    70 linear feet

Colonel Robert S. Allen was a famous Washington newspaper columnist before the war. A reserve officer from Wisconsin, he arranged to have himself called up in 1942 and, by 1943, he had been assigned to the fledgling Third Army. He was assigned to G2 and was responsible for the writing of training manuals and policies for the Third Army. During Third Army's attacks in Europe, he was one of the few people cleared for the ULTRA secrets. He was wounded and captured late in the war, but was recovered within two weeks and put back to work at Third Army. He was the author of Lucky Forward, a book about Third Army. This collection includes some personal correspondence, typewritten copies of his diaries for 1942 – 1945, and other materials concerning his military career, as well as notes on his books. His other personal papers were deposited at the Wisconsin State Historical Society Archives in Madison WI
